Charcot-Marie-Tooth, or CMT disease, is a genetic condition that affects the peripheral nerves. It can be recognized by progressive muscle weakness, particularly in the arms and legs. The condition is named after Jean Charcot, Pierre Marie, and Howard Henry Tooth, the physicians who first described it. Symptoms of Charcot foot often begin in adolescence or early adulthood and may include weakness and wasting of muscles in the foot and lower leg, as well as a loss of sensation in toes, and lower limbs. Additional symptoms can include abnormalities in foot muscles, unstable ankles, cramping in lower legs, and reduced reflexes. Over time, symptoms may worsen, leading to increased muscle and joint pain, neuropathic pain, and walking and mobility problems. Assistive devices, such as wheelchairs, leg braces, special shoes, or orthopedic devices, play an essential role in managing Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. If you believe you may be experiencing symptoms of CMT, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for a comprehensive assessment and personalized care planning.
Some foot conditions may require additional professional care. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists of Southwest Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
Rare Foot Conditions
The majority of foot conditions are common and can be treated by a podiatrist. Standard diagnostic procedures are generally used to identify specific conditions and treatment can be rendered. A podiatrist also treats rare foot conditions which can be difficult to diagnose and may need extra attention and care.
There are many rare foot conditions that can affect children. Some of these can include:
Freiberg’s disease - This can be seen as a deterioration and flattening of a metatarsal bone that exists in the ball of the foot. It typically affects pre-teen and teenage girls, but can affect anyone at any age. Symptoms that can accompany this can be swelling, stiffness, and the patient may limp.
Kohler’s disease - This often targets the bone in the arch of the foot and affects younger boys. It can lead to an interruption of the blood supply which ultimately can lead to bone deterioration. The patient may limp or experience tenderness, swelling, and redness.
Maffucci syndrome - This affects the long bones in a child’s foot leading to the development of abnormal bone lesions. They are benign growths and typically develop in early childhood and the bones may be susceptible to breaking.
A podiatrist can properly diagnose and treat all types of rare foot conditions. If your child is affected by any of these symptoms or conditions, please don’t hesitate to call our office so the correct treatment method can begin.

A diabetic foot blister, a manifestation of the complexities associated with diabetes, emerges as a consequence of heightened vulnerability to skin injuries. Diabetes, a metabolic condition affecting blood sugar regulation, often leads to impaired circulation and compromised nerve function in the extremities. This diminished sensation, known as diabetic neuropathy, means that individuals with diabetes may not readily detect friction or pressure that can result in blisters. When blisters form, the impaired circulation slows the healing process, making these normally benign lesions potential precursors to more severe complications. The risk of infection in a diabetic foot blister is elevated, posing a serious threat to foot health. Regular foot inspections, meticulous hygiene practices, and appropriate footwear choices become paramount for individuals navigating the delicate balance of diabetes. If you have developed this type of blister, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can guide you toward correct treatment methods.
Blisters may appear as a single bubble or in a cluster. They can cause a lot of pain and may be filled with pus, blood, or watery serum. If your feet are hurting, contact one of our podiatrists of Southwest Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
Foot Blisters
Foot blisters are often the result of friction. This happens due to the constant rubbing from shoes, which can lead to pain.
What Are Foot Blisters?
A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.
Symptoms
(Blister symptoms may vary depending on what is causing them)
Prevention & Treatment
In order to prevent blisters, you should be sure to wear comfortable shoes with socks that cushion your feet and absorb sweat. Breaking a blister open may increase your chances of developing an infection. However, if your blister breaks, you should wash the area with soap and water immediately and then apply a bandage to the affected area. If your blisters cause severe pain it is important that you call your podiatrist right away.

Fractures affecting the toes are a frequent occurrence. These fractures are often the result of crushing injuries or from stubbing the toes. While less common, joint hyperextension and stress fractures can also lead to toe fractures. Patients typically experience tenderness at the fracture site or pain when gentle pressure is applied to the affected digit. Imaging tools are valuable for identifying fractures, assessing displacement, and evaluating nearby areas and toes. There may be compromised circulation, open fractures, or significant soft tissue damage. Additionally, displaced or unstable fractures of the first toe may involve more than 25 percent of the joint surface. Stable, nondisplaced toe fractures are typically treated with buddy taping and the use of a rigid-sole shoe to restrict joint mobility. In contrast, displaced fractures of the lesser toes require reduction where the bone is manipulated back into place and buddy taping. If you have a broken toe, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment that will help relieve pain.
A broken toe can be very painful and lead to complications if not properly fixed. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Southwest Podiatry. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.
What to Know About a Broken Toe
Although most people try to avoid foot trauma such as banging, stubbing, or dropping heavy objects on their feet, the unfortunate fact is that it is a common occurrence. Given the fact that toes are positioned in front of the feet, they typically sustain the brunt of such trauma. When trauma occurs to a toe, the result can be a painful break (fracture).
Symptoms of a Broken Toe
Generally, it is best to stay off of the injured toe with the affected foot elevated.
Severe toe fractures may be treated with a splint, cast, and in some cases, minor surgery. Due to its position and the pressure it endures with daily activity, future complications can occur if the big toe is not properly treated.

Choosing the right running shoe is a critical decision that directly impacts both comfort and performance. Different foot types and running styles necessitate a personalized approach to ensure the perfect fit. For those individuals with high arches, cushioned shoes with ample shock absorption help absorb impact and provide essential support. Conversely, individuals with low arches or flat feet benefit from stability shoes that offer extra arch support and motion control. Runners who overpronate or supinate require shoes designed to address their specific gait patterns, preventing potential injuries. Determining your foot type and understanding your running mechanics are pivotal in guiding the selection process. Ultimately, investing time in finding the right running shoe tailored to your individual needs enhances not only the running experience but also safeguards against potential discomfort and injury. If you would like specific information about how to find the right running shoes for your needs, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist.

Choosing the Right Running Shoe for Your Foot Type
To increase performance and avoid the risk of injury, it is important to choose the right running shoe based on your foot type. The general design of running shoes revolves around pronation, which is how the ankle rolls from outside to inside when the foot strikes the ground.

Heel pain, a prevalent discomfort that can significantly impede mobility, stems from various underlying factors. One frequent culprit is plantar fasciitis, marked by inflammation of the thick tissue connecting the heel to the toes. This condition often results from excessive strain, causing stabbing pain near the heel, especially during the first steps in the morning. Achilles tendonitis, another common source of heel pain, occurs when the tendon connecting the calf muscles to the heel becomes inflamed, leading to discomfort and stiffness. Heel spurs, bony protrusions at the base of the heel, can develop due to prolonged inflammation, sometimes causing pain. Additionally, stress fractures, often linked to overuse or repetitive impact, can manifest as localized heel pain. Understanding these diverse causes is pivotal in addressing heel pain effectively. If you have heel pain for any reason, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can offer you helpful treatment remedies.
Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists of Southwest Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
Causes of Heel Pain
Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.
Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.
Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.
Why Might Heel Pain Occur?
Treatments
Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.
