Athlete’s foot is an ailment caused by a fungus that lives and thrives in warm and moist environments. These often include public swimming pools, shower room floors, and locker rooms. The fungus can enter the body through small cracks in the skin on the feet. Common symptoms that many patients experience can include severe itchiness, redness, and small blisters may develop. Effective prevention techniques can include wearing appropriate shoes while in these types of areas, in addition to practicing good foot hygiene. It is beneficial to frequently change socks and shoes, and to refrain from sharing them. If you are affected by athlete’s foot, it is suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help you to manage this uncomfortable condition.

What Is Athlete’s Foot?
Tinea pedis, more commonly known as athlete’s foot, is a non-serious and common fungal infection of the foot. Athlete’s foot is contagious and can be contracted by touching someone who has it or infected surfaces. The most common places contaminated by it are public showers, locker rooms, and swimming pools. Once contracted, it grows on feet that are left inside moist, dark, and warm shoes and socks.
Prevention
The most effective ways to prevent athlete’s foot include:
Symptoms
Athlete’s foot initially occurs as a rash between the toes. However, if left undiagnosed, it can spread to the sides and bottom of the feet, toenails, and if touched by hand, the hands themselves. Symptoms include:
Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnosis is quick and easy. Skin samples will be taken and either viewed under a microscope or sent to a lab for testing. Sometimes, a podiatrist can diagnose it based on simply looking at it. Once confirmed, treatment options include oral and topical antifungal medications.

Our feet are body parts that are often taken for granted but they are so important to get us through life. Most people have probably suffered from foot and/or ankle discomfort at some point. The majority of ankle and foot problems are chronic and are generally caused by repetitive movement leading to overuse and strain. Overloaded tendons or joints can lead to tendonitis or cartilage breakdown and continual stretching of ligaments can lead to joint instability. Important things to consider in trying to prevent foot problems include force (compression, tension, torsion/twisting) on feet and ankles, foot type, body weight, activity, and frequency of activity. Developing a relationship with a podiatrist early and seeing such a specialist throughout one’s life can help with the prevention of foot and ankle problems and treatment of such problems if they do arise.

Biomechanics in Podiatry
Podiatric biomechanics is a particular sector of specialty podiatry with licensed practitioners who are trained to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle and lower leg. Biomechanics deals with the forces that act against the body, causing an interference with the biological structures. It focuses on the movement of the ankle, the foot and the forces that interact with them.
A History of Biomechanics
Modern technological improvements are based on past theories and therapeutic processes that provide a better understanding of podiatric concepts for biomechanics. Computers can provide accurate information about the forces and patterns of the feet and lower legs.
Understanding biomechanics of the feet can help improve and eliminate pain, stopping further stress to the foot.

The Achilles tendon connects the two large calf muscles at the back of the leg to the heel bone. It makes flexing the foot possible, along with walking, running, and jumping. When the Achilles tendon becomes damaged, swollen, and painful, it is known as Achilles tendinitis or Achilles tendinopathy. This condition can occur for a variety of reasons including failing to warm up the calf muscles prior to working out, wearing shoes that do not support the feet properly, suddenly increasing the intensity/amount of physical activity, running too often or on hard surfaces, participating in activities with a lot of jumping, or accidentally turning your foot in or out abruptly. Other risk factors for Achilles tendinitis include being a middle-aged or older adult or having flat feet or a growth or heel spur at the back of the heel (both of which can irritate or put pressure on the tendon). If you believe you have Achilles tendinitis, make an appointment with your podiatrist as soon as possible to begin treatment.
Achilles tendon injuries need immediate attention to avoid future complications. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists of Southwest Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
What Is the Achilles Tendon?
The Achilles tendon is a tendon that connects the lower leg muscles and calf to the heel of the foot. It is the strongest tendon in the human body and is essential for making movement possible. Because this tendon is such an integral part of the body, any injuries to it can create immense difficulties and should immediately be presented to a doctor.
What Are the Symptoms of an Achilles Tendon Injury?
There are various types of injuries that can affect the Achilles tendon. The two most common injuries are Achilles tendinitis and ruptures of the tendon.

Treatment and Prevention
Achilles tendon injuries are diagnosed by a thorough physical evaluation, which can include an MRI. Treatment involves rest, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery. However, various preventative measures can be taken to avoid these injuries, such as:

If you are experiencing stabbing or burning nerve pain, numbness, weakness, or tingling in the feet, you may have peripheral neuropathy. Peripheral neuropathy is a dysfunction of the body’s peripheral nervous system, which is outside of the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord). Peripheral neuropathy can be caused by some sort of damage or illness to a nerve (or nerves)—anywhere along the pathway from the spine to the feet—or from spinal problems. It may also be associated with certain medical conditions such as arthritis, Charcot–Marie–Tooth disease, Lyme disease, or shingles. Alcoholism or side effects from certain medications may even damage the peripheral nerves. Peripheral neuropathy should not be taken lightly, as it may lead to the formation of foot ulcers or circulatory disorders, as well as other complications. If you believe you may have peripheral neuropathy, make an appointment with a podiatrist as soon as possible to have your condition diagnosed and treated properly.

If you have any concerns that you may be experiencing nerve loss in your feet, consult with one of our podiatrists from Southwest Podiatry. What Is Neuropathy?
Neuropathy is a condition that leads to damage to the nerves in the body. Peripheral neuropathy, or neuropathy that affects your peripheral nervous system, usually occurs in the feet. Neuropathy can be triggered by a number of different causes. Such causes include diabetes, infections, cancers, disorders, and toxic substances.
Symptoms of Neuropathy Include:
Those with diabetes are at serious risk due to being unable to feel an ulcer on their feet. Diabetics usually also suffer from poor blood circulation. This can lead to the wound not healing, infections occurring, and the limb may have to be amputated.
Treatment
To treat neuropathy in the foot, podiatrists will first diagnose the cause of the neuropathy. Figuring out the underlying cause of the neuropathy will allow the podiatrist to prescribe the best treatment, whether it be caused by diabetes, toxic substance exposure, infection, etc. If the nerve has not died, then it’s possible that sensation may be able to return to the foot.
Pain medication may be issued for pain. Electrical nerve stimulation can be used to stimulate nerves. If the neuropathy is caused from pressure on the nerves, then surgery may be necessary.
